From SEO to Agent Discoverability: How Software Gets Chosen Now

Ranking wins a human click. Agent discoverability is whether a tool can be understood and invoked. Visibility is not the same as being choosable.

You can rank first and still lose the selection. An agent does not scan ten blue links. It reads the tools in its context, matches a schema, and invokes one.

I still care about search. I stopped treating a #1 result as proof you are choosable. Visibility gets a human onto a page. Discoverability, for an agent, is whether it can understand you and pick you.

Those are not the same job.

Why ranking stopped predicting who gets used

SEO was built for a person who types a query, skims a list, and clicks the result that looks safest. You optimized titles, backlinks, and click-through because that person was the buyer.

An agent skips the list. It already has a task. It checks which tools it can see, reads their descriptions, and picks the one that fits. Domain authority does not enter that comparison. Neither does your hero screenshot.

Think about the surfaces you have been funding. Landing pages, meta descriptions, CTR tests. Agents do not read those the way a person does. They read tool descriptions, schemas, and reference docs, then call whatever matches.

  • Human selection: search, click, evaluate, decide
  • Agent selection: read context, match schema, invoke

If you only measure the first sequence, you will keep winning pages and losing invocations.

What agent discoverability actually means

Agent discoverability is making software findable, understandable, and selectable by a new class of user: an agent acting for a person.

Discovery happens through registries, structured metadata, APIs, and protocol-level descriptions. The agent does not type your brand into Google. It asks what tools are available and whether one of them does the job.

People will call this "AI agent SEO." The phrase misleads. SEO implies a rank. Agent discoverability is closer to being parseable and invokable when something looks for a tool that does what you do. You can be famous in search and absent from that list.

How an agent chooses one tool over another

When two tools could finish the same job, the agent does not weigh your backlink profile. It weighs whether it can tell what the tool does, what it accepts, and what happens when the call fails.

Four signals show up again and again:

  • Description: Does the text state the job in language a model can match?
  • Schema: Are inputs and outputs typed, complete, and honest?
  • Examples: Can the agent see a working call before it spends a retry budget?
  • Errors: If the first call is wrong, is there a repair, or a dead end?

Agents do not file a lost-deal reason. A vague description or a broken example is enough to pick the other tool. You will not see that in the CRM. You will see a quiet week that no longer shows up as a traffic problem.

A result you won and a tool you lost

Last quarter a webhook vendor I know sat at the top of Google for the query their content team had chased for a year. Fine. A coding agent in Cursor still skipped them.

The agent had three tools in context. Two had a one-line description and a schema. The ranked vendor had a beautiful docs site and a tool named manage_webhooks with no argument list. The agent picked the second tool, sent a test event, and moved on. The #1 page never loaded. Search Console still looked like a win.

That is the gap. You were visible. You were not choosable. Rank can put a person on your docs. It cannot put your tool in the set an agent is allowed to call, and it cannot repair a description that does not name the job.

What carries over from SEO and what breaks

Some habits still help. Structured data, clear descriptions, and content that is actually true still matter because agents still read your words. What breaks is everything that depended on rank, clicks, and attention as proof of demand.

Agents read the content directly. They do not inherit your position on a results page, and they do not generate the pageviews you use to prove the program worked.

Visible is not the same as choosable

Being indexed, mentioned, or listed is not the same as being invoked. An agent can find your product and still fail at auth, hit a useless error, or abandon after a retry. "Discovered but not used" is a common miss. Your docs can be crawled. Your API can be listed. If the agent cannot complete the call, you lost the selection without a bounce rate to inspect.

Usability here is not delight. It is whether the description, the schema, and the first error form a path the agent can follow. A page that ranks and a tool that cannot be called are different assets. Only one of them gets chosen at inference time.

You can be cited in an AI overview and still lose the invocation. Mention is not selection. Selection is a call that matches a task and returns something the agent can use.

Why your traffic report cannot see the choice

Pageviews measure human attention. Agent selection often produces none. An agent that reads your OpenAPI spec, calls your API, and finishes a job may never fire the tag you trust.

Website traffic no longer maps cleanly to demand. Bot filters, 401s, and API logs each hold a fragment. None of them reconstructs whether you were the tool that got picked.

You can keep doing SEO. You should. Just stop using rank as a proxy for being the option an agent can actually use.

No. GEO is about getting mentioned in an AI-generated answer. Agent discoverability is about being selected and used when an agent has a job to finish. One is a citation. The other is an invocation.

Do AI agents read the same content that ranks on Google?

Often the same docs, read for a different reason. Humans scan for relevance cues. Agents parse for schemas, parameters, and examples. The URL can overlap. The reading does not.
